Advancing Teacher Workforce Data: A Call for Innovative Solutions

Beyond100K, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, is excited to explore solutions to tackle the critical challenge of tracking and predicting teacher workforce needs. This effort is key to ensuring that every student, particularly in underserved communities, has access to quality STEM education. As part of this initiative, Beyond100K has released a Request for Proposals (RFP), inviting experts to contribute innovative solutions to advance teacher workforce data systems.

The Challenge
Each year, approximately 60,000 STEM teachers leave the profession, with the impact often most deeply felt in communities of color. A key factor contributing to the persistence of this shortage is the lack of real-time, disaggregated data that states need to effectively manage and plan for their teacher workforce. Without detailed information on teacher supply and demand, including demographic and geographic factors, states face challenges in implementing targeted solutions that address their unique needs.

The Opportunity
In April, Beyond100K convened over 30 state and nonprofit leaders dedicated to improving the understanding and response to teacher workforce trends. Through collaborative discussions and the sharing of insights, the group developed a strategy designed to equip states with the tools and knowledge needed to better track, predict, and meet their teacher workforce needs.

The RFP outlines a multi-faceted approach to building states’ capacity to accurately track, predict, and plan for their teacher workforce needs. It has three core components:

  1. Field Scan: Elevate existing bright spots and best practices in teacher workforce data systems.
  2. Community of Practice: Foster collective learning and the state-level application of effective practices.
  3. Targeted Expert Support: Provide tailored assistance to help states build and sustain the capacity needed to implement these systems.

How to Get Involved
Beyond100K is calling on researchers, nonprofits, and technical experts to bring their skills and passion to this transformative effort. Whether you’re an innovator in data systems or know someone who is, this is the moment to make a difference. By participating in the Request for Proposals (RFP), you can play a crucial role in creating a future where every state is equipped to support a strong, diverse, and sustainable STEM teacher workforce. Proposals are due by Friday, September 13th, 2024.
